Gypsy Girl (Original)

Client requested a hand-painted reproduction of a piece by Charles Roka, known also as the Prince of Kitsch. Roka created numerous studies of this same gypsy girl, though this piece is the most captivating.

Gypsy Girl (Reproduction)

Roka’s flesh tones used a dominant amount of raw umber and yellow ochre, and the clothing is saturated in warm cadmiums. Though the colors were easy to match, Roka painted quickly, so matching brush strokes proved difficult. I used large, wide brushes and my palette knife, and mixed the paint to varying levels of viscosity while layering. Though my version is less fluid than the original, I was happy with the result.
